Welcome to Best Diets for Diabetics
Healthier eating for Diabetics – The first step to dealing with Diabetes.
I have created this page from personal experience, to help other Diabetics on their way to managing their diet.
I have only been a Type 2 Diabetic for just over a year now, and my lifestyle (or eating habits) definitely attributed to the onset of Diabetes. Now I must manage my diet and blood glucose levels, as well as cholesterol levels – if I don’t serious medical problems can cause plenty of problems, like heart disease, loss of vision and other serious health problems.
Here I am sharing some of my learning so you can benefit as well. Please let your Diabetic friends know about what I have shared here.
Low GI Diets
One of the best Diet Plans to follow is a Low Glycemic Index (GI) diet.
Low Gl diets are designed so that the carbohydrates you eat are absorbed slowly into the bloodstream, and do not cause large spikes in your glucose levels. You see, it is carbohydrates that are converted to glucose, as well as sugars, and the carbs can sneak up on you and cause big problems.
Once your Doctor diagnoses you with Type 2 Diabetes, they will no doubt refer you to see a Dietician. But you should also find out the most you can also about the causes of Diabetes, and the types of foods you should both avoid or consume more of.
The biggest things are to look at breads, to discover that those “healthier” ones are not all low GI. Spelt bread is a great option, or those with a high degree of whole grains. Some rices like Jasmine Rice are High GI, whilst Busmati rice is Low GI.
Some Pasta’s are better than others, it pays to research which ones in your supermarket are the best.

Another key is one that was simply put to me when I was doing my research. You need to increase your intake of fruit and vegetables. On your meal plate, change the proportions of food so that 50% is Vegetables, 25% is Protein, and 25% is Carbohydrates. This will be a simple but significant step to balancing your diet into a healthier one for everyone, not just diabetics.
Go out and get a guide book to the GI of foods to help you when shopping for food, or when ordering food at restaurants, there are many pocket guides that will be a great help to you until you get the hang of low GI eating.
Good luck and enjoy eating yourself to better health.
